Based on the 2021-2022 data, the undergraduate student population at SMSU is largely skewed towards women students, with 61.4% of undergraduate students being women and 38.6% being men. The total number of full-time, first-year undergraduate students is 6,556, with 4,023 women and 2,533 men.
On the other hand, the graduate student population at SMSU is greatly skewed towards women students, with 66.7% of undergraduate students being women and 33.3% being men. The total number of full-time, graduate students is 430, with 287 women and 143 men.

The largest ethnic group among the students is White, comprising 79.8% of the undergraduates population , with a total of 5,220 students.
Following behind are Hispanic students, constituting 5.0% of the student body, with 330 students. African American students represent 3.3% of the population, with 214 students, while Mixed race students account for 3.0%, with 198 students. Asian students account for 2.0% of the undergraduate student body, comprising 130 students. Finally, Hawaiian students have the smallest representation at 0.1% , with 9 students.
